Somebody has taken an interest in my garden diary, so it’s time I admit that I am long overdue for an update. This summer’s oddly mild and rainy weather has prompted a change in my garden. In the past, I was often guilty of under-watering my plants, leading to some crispy, brown leaves. But I am now learning that rain leads to dead plants, mushrooms, and slugs, among other mysterious changes. It’s a whole new garden. I discovered the slugs when I started noticing entire leaves being eaten away in one particular garden. I was instructed by a master gardener to put beer in a bowl and the slugs would be drawn to it. This is true and slugs are gross. But I think I caught a few. I’ll keep working on it.
My potted zinnias are blooming, but weakly. As I have neglected my blog, I have also neglected my garden. I weeded last weekend and this has helped motivate me to finish this summer out right.
Here are a few shots of what’s left after a summer of partial neglect, too much rain, and a lot of slugs.

These last for a long time!

Garden having a drink.

Zinnia? Tiny little thing.

Vinca with more rain on it.

Mums already

Dahlia with slug damage. So sad!
I shot this on Sunday, I promise.

July 5, 2009 - Some sort of Daisy thing

July 1, 2009 - Wildflower
Sometimes I have accidental good timing. Today, I was beating myself up over waiting until Wednesday to take my garden shots. Then I was afraid I waited too late as the sun started to set, requiring me to use flash. Well, it turns out that wasn’t such a bad thing. I think this is a very pretty shot. And I just missed the torrential downpour that is occurring at this moment!

June 24, 2009 - White Lily
Another first time flowering plant escaping deer munching.
Even though I should be posting the roses because they will be gone next week, I am posting this instead. By some miracle, they did not become a part of the annual deer buffet. This is the first summer that I have been able to enjoy our day lillies.

Foxglove started blooming last week but I wasn’t satisfied with my photo until this week.

June 7, 2009 - Foxglove
A little late this week, but we’re still blooming.

June 2, 2009 - Daisies
In honor of the news that Daisy will visit the states again this Summer, we have Daisies in bloom.
This week the Vinca Vines sprouted some blooms. These little purple pinwheels seem to appear without warning and disappear as quickly. Not every vine will bloom and they seem to require a bit of maturity before they start blooming.

There isn’t much newly in bloom in the garden this week, just a lot of new foliage growth. But I do have blooms in my hanging basket and pots so I am sharing one of those. The flowers appear to be sort of out of focus. It was taken in a hurry when we returned from South Jersey this afternoon under clouds and setting sun. But it might just be the oddly clear-blue color of the flowers giving it that look. Either way, enjoy the garden’s 5th week on the Internet.

May 17, 2009 - Blue flowers in hanging basket
This week, wildflowers started to bloom. I grew these from wildflower seeds last summer so I’m not sure what they are, but they are certainly bright.

We remain deer-free following my Week 2 nightmare. Let’s hope that continues.
